Gunshot alerts at the GLM residence of former President Kabila in Kinshasa to counter an attempted intrusion by the progressive forces of the UDPS.

Gunfire was reported today at the private residence of former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila in the Gombe neighborhood of Kinshasa.

According to Adam Shemishi, communications advisor to Olive Lembe Kabila, the wife of the former president, the incident was caused by an attempted intrusion by the “Forces du progrès” militia affiliated with the UDPS, while Mrs. Lembe Kabila was at the scene.

The security forces present on the scene then responded with gunfire to disperse the attackers and restore calm to the neighborhood.

At present, no casualties have been reported following this incident. The situation seems to have returned to calm in the Gombe district.

The competent authorities have been notified of this incident and an investigation should be opened to determine the exact circumstances.

This incident comes in a tense political context in the DRC, with recurring tensions between the country’s various political parties and movements. Security around leading political figures is regularly the subject of particular attention.

It remains to be seen what will happen to this attempted break-in at the residence of former President Kabila and the conclusions of the investigation that should be carried out by the authorities.
