ST. PETER, Minn. – The No. 19 Gustavus Adolphus College men’s tennis team continued its strong season Saturday, securing decisive victories over both St. Olaf College and Augustana University. The Gusties swept St. Olaf 7-0 and followed it up with a 5-2 win against Augustana, improving their overall record to 10-5 and maintaining a perfect 4-0 mark in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). This weekend’s performance underscores Gustavus’s position as a leading force in regional collegiate tennis.
The Gusties demonstrated their dominance from the outset, showcasing a well-rounded team performance in both matches. Their success hinges on a combination of strong doubles play and consistent singles victories, a formula that proved effective against both opponents. Gusties Sweep St. Olaf 7-0
The day began with a clean sweep against the St. Olaf Oles. Gustavus controlled the doubles matches, starting with Gage Gohl and Tyler Haddorff taking the No. 1 match 6-1. Noah Hakim and Owen Skanse followed with a 6-3 victory in the No. 2 doubles, and Joseph Li and Quinn Monson completed the doubles sweep with a 7-5 win.
In singles play, the Gusties continued to excel. Gohl rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) win at No. 1 singles. Dominik Knutson secured a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2. Hakim added another point with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3, while Monson triumphed 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4. Owen Skanse nearly swept his match at No. 5 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1, and Yash Bahalkar closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6.
Augustana Falls to Gustavus 5-2
Later in the day, the Gusties faced a tougher challenge against the Augustana University Vikings, ultimately prevailing 5-2. The doubles team of Gohl and Haddorff continued their winning streak, securing a 6-3 victory at No. 1. Knutson and Takura Mhwandagara followed with a 6-3 win at No. 2, and Hakim and Skanse clinched the doubles point for Gustavus with a 7-6 victory at No. 3.
The Gusties carried their momentum into singles play. Knutson earned a point with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2, and Haddorff followed with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3. Deuce Daniel clinched the match for Gustavus with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4, securing the fourth team point. While Augustana managed to secure wins at No. 1, and No. 6 singles, Luke Fridinger sealed the victory for Gustavus with a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 5, bringing the final score to 5-2.
