Halden-artist’s Paintings to Shine in Times Square, New York

Times Square, the iconic, perpetually bustling heart of New York City, is known for its dazzling lights, Broadway theaters, and constant stream of visitors. Soon, it will also showcase the art of Linda Tveter, a painter from Halden, Norway. Her work is set to appear on one of the area’s massive digital billboards this week, bringing a touch of Scandinavian creativity to the center of the world.

The opportunity represents a significant milestone for Tveter, who describes herself as a hobbyist artist. The selection of her paintings for display in such a prominent location is a testament to the growing recognition of her work on international art platforms. But how did an artist working from a corner of her kitchen in Halden find herself with a spotlight in one of the most visited places on Earth?

Tveter’s journey began with a chance encounter on a flight in 2016. While traveling, she met a couple – an artist and her manager – who were impressed by her work and encouraged her to exhibit at Galleri Albin Art in Oslo. That initial exhibition opened doors to further opportunities, including a show in Madrid in 2022 and virtual exhibitions in London. Her profile and artwork were subsequently featured on international art platforms like Artsy and Artsper, leading to a surge in invitations to showcase her paintings globally.

From Kitchen Corner to Global Stage

Tveter’s artistic process is deeply rooted in her surroundings. She paints at home, often inspired by the views of the fjord near her home in Refne, Halden. Having rediscovered her creative passion in her 40s, she dedicates herself to abstract painting, embracing the diverse interpretations her work evokes. She initially worked with oil on canvas, transitioning to acrylics in 2016. Her inspiration stems from light, shifting colors, and the moods they create.

The invitation to exhibit in Times Square came as a surprise, even given her recent successes. Tveter is one of twelve international artists selected to have their work displayed on the iconic billboards. Each artist will have up to three pieces showcased for one minute each, rotating throughout the day. According to Times Square NYC, over 200,000 people pass through the area daily, ensuring a vast audience for her art.

A Personal Connection to the Work

Tveter has chosen three paintings for the Times Square display, each holding personal significance. “I see my classic moped helmet, tree trunks, and many different stories I grew up with in these pictures,” she explained. Despite the magnitude of the opportunity, Tveter will not be traveling to New York to witness the exhibition in person.

Expanding Reach Through Online Platforms

The artist’s increasing visibility is partly attributable to her presence on online art platforms. Following her exhibition in Madrid, her profile and artwork were published on Artsy and Artsper, significantly broadening her reach. She notes that the art world can often be dominated by established artists with substantial financial resources, making her success particularly noteworthy. The high participation fees associated with many international exhibitions have not been a priority for her, yet opportunities continue to arise.

“I’m very excited. It’s fun and a little touching that I, sitting here in Halden, get such an invitation,” Tveter said. The display in Times Square represents not just a professional achievement, but a deeply personal moment for the artist.

As Linda Tveter’s work prepares to illuminate Times Square, it marks a compelling story of artistic passion, unexpected opportunities, and the power of online platforms to connect artists with a global audience. The exhibition promises to bring a unique perspective to the vibrant landscape of New York City, and it will be interesting to see what future opportunities arise from this exposure.
