Hamas has released five out of six hostages agreed upon as part of the ceasefire that began last month.
The first two hostages,Tal Shoham,40,and Avera Mengistu,38,were released Saturday morning in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.Thay were handed over to the Israeli military by the Red Cross and later crossed into Israel.
Shoham was kidnapped from kibbutz Be’eri on October 7,2023,while Mengistu,an Israeli from Ashkelon,crossed into Gaza in 2014.
Simultaneously occurring,three othre hostages,Eliya Cohen,Omer Shem Tov,and Omer Wenkert,were released at a separate location in Nuseirat,central Gaza. They were also given to the Red Cross in a highly orchestrated ceremony.
A fourth hostage, Hisham al-Sayed, 37, an Arab-Israeli from a Bedouin community in southern Israel, was expected to be released in Nuseirat but his location has now changed.
Both al-sayed and mengistu reportedly have serious mental health conditions.
Shoham was one of four hostages taken by Hamas militants on October 7, along with Eliya Cohen, Omer Shem Tov, and Omer Wenkert, all of whom were taken from the Nova music festival. Shoham was also taken from the kibbutz along with his two children, wife, and mother-in-law, all of whom were released in November 2023.
hamas has stated its expectation that israel will release 602 Palestinian prisoners and detainees in exchange. Of those, 50 had been sentenced to life imprisonment, and another 60 are serving long sentences. Additionally, 445 were detained in Gaza since October 7, 2023, and held without charge.
The captives being released on Saturday are the last living hostages whom Israel and Hamas agreed to exchange during indirect talks in Qatar last month.
