Wildlife officials captured a 500-pound bear dubbed ‘Hank the Tank’. A 500-pound black bear that has been terrorizing the Lake Tahoe area since 2022 and destroyed 21 homes has been captured. Locals nicknamed the bear ‘Hank the Tank’ following the property damage. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said three cubs of a bear caught in a recent home break-in and the newly captured bear will be sent to a wildlife sanctuary in Colorado.

In February 2022, the bear had ‘lost its fear of people’ and was unstoppable by police paintballs, bean bags, sirens and stun guns. DNA evidence confirmed that Hank, the female bear, was responsible for at least 21 home demolitions and other ‘extensive property damage’, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said in a statement.

California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife reported Friday that most of the damage caused by captured bears occurred during the winter, a consequence of the climate crisis and the region’s low food availability, which has kept bears from hibernating.
