Harvest 2023: the heat of September comes to the rescue of Quebec winegrowers

“The rain makes fungal diseases more complicated to combat,” explains Louis Denault, of the Ste-Pétronille vineyard. But we still managed to do well, and the month of September looks really good, we’ve just had a crazy week!”

Last week’s heat wave proved to be an unexpected helping hand from Mother Nature. “It raises the sugar levels, it helps the grapes to finalize their ripening,” underlines Steve Boyer, of the Isle de Bacchus vineyard.

The challenges also promise to be significant for the coming years. While climate change may be positive in some ways for winegrowers, the unpredictability of conditions will force them to adapt.

“The heat can help us achieve better maturity, but with climate change comes several hazards, such as extreme phenomena or more rain,” concludes Patrick Blouin, of the St-Pierre vineyard.
