Havixbeck, Germany – A weekly English conversation group in Havixbeck is proving to be more than just a language refresher, blossoming into a “Happy Place” for its attendees. Led by London native Toby Marchant, the “English-Corner” at Stift Tilbeck offers a relaxed and engaging environment for around 20 people to practice their English skills and forge latest connections.
The sessions, held each Wednesday morning in the “Ladenlokal” of Stift Tilbeck, have become a highlight of the week for many participants. Attendees report a welcoming atmosphere where laughter and learning go hand-in-hand. The focus isn’t just on grammar and vocabulary, but on building confidence and enjoying the process of communication. This unique approach to language learning, combined with Marchant’s engaging personality, has fostered a strong sense of community.
“For me, it’s one of the most beautiful appointments of the whole week,” shared one participant, as reported by local media. “There’s a lot of laughter, and we really endeavor to say everything in English. That way, you stay in practice and learn a lot of new things. We love it!” The group affectionately refers to Marchant simply as “the Englishman.”
Toby Marchant’s journey to the Münsterland region began a decade ago, driven by a surprising twist of fate. He initially traveled from London to Spain for a short trip and unexpectedly met his future wife, who hails from Coesfeld, Germany. “I had to get out of London at the time, flew to Spain for a short trip, and then met my future wife there, she comes from Coesfeld. Crazy, right?” Marchant recounted with a laugh.
A Growing Community at Stift Tilbeck
The English-Corner is just one example of the community-focused activities taking place at Stift Tilbeck. The organization, located in Havixbeck, emphasizes connection and mutual support. Stift Tilbeck GmbH describes itself as a service provider in the areas of assistance and support, fostering a sense of belonging for individuals in Havixbeck, Senden, Appelhülsen, Münster, and Nottuln.
Stift Tilbeck is also forging new partnerships to strengthen its future offerings. Recently, the organization announced a strategic partnership with Alexianer MS, a Münster-based organization specializing in support for people with disabilities. The collaboration, expected to launch in the spring, aims to expand services and improve support for clients.
The Power of Informal Learning
The success of the English-Corner highlights the benefits of informal learning environments. Unlike traditional classroom settings, the group emphasizes conversation and practical application of the language. This approach allows participants to learn at their own pace and build confidence in real-world communication. The relaxed atmosphere encourages participation and reduces the pressure often associated with language learning.
The group’s popularity demonstrates a growing interest in language learning and cultural exchange within the community. It also underscores the importance of creating welcoming spaces where people can connect and learn from one another. The “English-Corner” at Stift Tilbeck serves as a model for how informal learning initiatives can foster community and personal growth.
Looking ahead, the English-Corner is expected to continue providing a valuable service to the community, offering a unique blend of language practice, cultural exchange, and social connection. The partnership between Stift Tilbeck and Alexianer MS also promises to bring new opportunities and expanded services to the region.
