A fire broke out in an apartment building in Viršuliškės at the beginning of January, during which two people died – a minor and an adult. As a result of this disaster, 57 residents of the house were left without shelter, some of them moved to social housing, the municipality announced.

The investigation was also undertaken by a working group formed by the municipality, which also prepared an action plan, what needs to be done next, and how much it will cost.

Part of the house will have to be demolished

Mayor V. Benkunskas spoke regarding this at a press conference held on Wednesday evening, following which he met with the residents of this apartment building.

“Only following the disaster occurred, in order to promptly help the affected residents, did we declare an emergency situation – this made it easier to manage the situation and provide the necessary assistance. Non-governmental organizations and thousands of people also actively helped – thank you for the unity in this situation.

Today, we already have an action plan on how to return the homes of the affected residents as soon as possible,” said Vilnius City Mayor Valdas Benkunskas.
