Dr. Soucy saw an opportunity. “I offered to buy his office, provided that there was time for me to find ophthalmologists to take over,” he explains. This led to the arrival of Dr. Étienne Vachon-Joannette, specializing in surgery, followed by Dr. Steven Gagnon two years later. Dr. Simard’s retirement paved the way for a clinic poised for growth.
However, growth demanded space. The original 3,000 square foot clinic quickly became restrictive. “At 3,000 square feet, it was difficult to have more than one professional working at a time,” Dr. Soucy noted. There, it’s more industrial, less personalized,” he stated. He draws a compelling analogy: “I often say: McDonald’s is a restaurant, but it’s not Slate. Here, we want to offer a human service, close to people.”
