French More Favorable to Gamete Donation but Hesitant to Take Action
The Biomedicine Agency has just released its 2025 barometer on the perception of gamete donation by the French, revealing a notable increase in awareness but a persistent hesitation to act. According to the barometer, 76% of French people are favorable to the donation of gametes, with 78% having heard of it and 67% knowing precisely what it entails.
Despite this increased awareness, only 19% of respondents are definitely ready to donate, while 42% are possibly interested. The disparity between men and women is evident, with women showing more willingness to donate compared to men.
Increased Information, Persistent Hesitancy
The barometer indicates that 45% of French people now feel sufficiently informed about gamete donation, a significant increase from 23% in 2024. Among potential donors, 38% are concerned about the subject, up from 33% in 2024. However, this increased awareness has not translated into immediate action, as only 13% of respondents of giving age are both concerned, favorable, and sufficiently informed.
“Obtaining more information would encourage 77% of those of giving age and favorable to the donation to start the steps to make a donation,” notes the Biomedicine Agency.
Growing Demand and Limited Supply
The demand for gamete donors has been on the rise since the 2021 bioethics law, with over 10,600 women awaiting assisted reproductive technology (ART) with sperm donation as of December 31, 2024. While there has been an increase in sperm donor candidates (1,045 in 2024 compared to 676 in 2023), the pressure on medical assistance for procreation remains strong.
