Hidalgo women, 42 times more affected by HPV than men

Breaking News: Over 300 Cases of HPV Reported in Hidalgo, Mexico

PACHUCA, Mexico – In urgent breaking news, the state of Hidalgo has reported over 300 cases of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) so far this year. The data, released by the General Directorate of Epidemiology (DGE) of the Federal Ministry of Health (SSA), reveals a stark disparity: women have been affected 42 times more than men.

Key Findings and Statistics

Out of the 345 total cases reported by the end of week 25, 2025, more than 200 were related to HPV. Among these, 40 cases were sexually transmitted, with the most high-risk types being classifications 16 and 18. These classifications are known to potentially lead to cancer development.

In the period from June 15 to 21, health personnel in Hidalgo detected six new cases of HPV affecting the skin. This year, only eight cases were diagnosed in men, compared to 337 in women. Despite the high number of cases, the detections have decreased by half compared to the same period last year, when 702 cases were reported.

National Overview

Nationally, the DGE reported 378 new diagnoses in a week, bringing the total number of affected Mexicans to 10,665 so far this year. This figure is higher than the 8,880 cases reported at the same time last year. While the disparity between men and women affected by HPV is significant, it is not as pronounced as in Hidalgo, with 6.3 women affected for every man.

Preventative Measures and Vaccination

Preventative measures include the use of condoms and regular Papanicolaou (cytology) tests or HPV tests for women aged 21 to 65, every three years. Vaccines have also been developed and validated to prevent the most aggressive types of HPV, which can cause cancer or genital warts.

Historical Context and Future Implications

HPV is a common virus that can be transmitted sexually. While many types are low-risk and cause genital warts or skin issues, high-risk types can lead to serious health complications, including certain cancers. The increasing awareness and early detection efforts are crucial in reducing the impact of HPV in communities like Hidalgo.

As medical research continues to advance, the hope is that more effective preventative measures and treatments will become available, reducing the incidence of HPV-related health issues.
