A two-year-old boy died following eating a piece of strawberry, which completely obstructed his airways, which in turn led to cardiac arrest.
The child was resuscitated and taken to the hospital for endoscopy to extract the piece of strawberry, but he died immediately following being removed.
Dr. Mohamed El-Gazzar, a consultant chest and heart surgeon at Benha University Hospital in Qalyubia Governorate, said that immediately following receiving the child, a medical team began trying to save him, as he was in a very critical condition and was placed on a respirator, but his heart stopped for the second time.
He pointed out that the piece of strawberry had already been extracted, and it turned out to be large in size and caused a complete blockage of the airway, and therefore the child might not bear shortness of breath for a long time, and even following extracting it, his condition remained critical from the period of respiratory arrest until death.
He warned of the danger of children swallowing foreign objects and food at an early age, indicating that the problem is very serious.
