While the intensity of this exhibition game wasn’t quite the same as facing off against NHL talent at the New York Islanders’ camp, Schaefer expressed immense satisfaction simply being back on the ice and competing. “Probably one of the best feelings for a long time,” Schaefer shared. “It’s so good to come back in a match mentally and be able to fight with a talented group. I felt good. Obviously, there were several emotions as I didn’t know how I was going to feel. It was incredible.”

The layoff had clearly taken its toll, but the exhilaration of playing returned quickly. “I hadn’t played a game for a long time,so you never know what to expect,” he admitted. “But when you’re here, we can take control of the match and do what we like. It’s so pleasant. Just have contact again. We play for that.”

Goaltender Carter George, a teammate who also participated in the camp, echoed the positive sentiment. “Seeing him back in a game situation was pleasant to see,” George commented. “He is a special player and an even better person. It’s unusual to play with him.”

Schaefer’s previous season with the Erie Otters of the OHL was severely limited. He managed to play in only 17 games, accumulating seven goals and 22 points. His season was hampered from the start,missing the first nine games due to mononucleosis,followed by the season-ending collarbone fracture sustained on December 27th.

Another notable prospect at the camp, Michael Hage, who knows firsthand the challenges of shoulder injuries after missing significant time himself, was impressed by schaefer’s performance. “Everyone knows what type of player he is,” Hage said. “I have a lot of respect for guys who come back from shoulder injury. I came back from a shoulder injury in my first year at the junior level, so I understand how challenging it is indeed, not only physically but also mentally. I was very impressed.”

Despite his limited game time last season, Schaefer’s potential was undeniable, earning him the title of top prospect for the CHL and his high draft selection by the islanders. The Ontario native has set ambitious goals, aiming to be the next top overall pick to make a direct transition to the NHL. As he told TSN Radio 1050 in mid-July, “I want to be in a formation for the first game of the season, and there are still things that I have to work on in the gym and on the ice. I think I must be stronger.”
