Antique material enjoys a constant popularity in the theater business, as it deals with timeless themes such as power, love, sacrifice and war, which at first glance seem pleasantly distant. Is it now appropriate to leave the mythological narratives in which goddesses and gods are in charge in their remoteness or in their strangeness accompanied by peculiar laws, or is it advisable to reduce these events into everyday life for a contemporary audience? In the case of Odyssey at the Landestheater Salzburg, director Nuran David Calis chooses the middle path: “human” motives for action always remain comprehensible in a visually fascinating, distant world.
