Hotel Explosion: Tourists Evacuated – Latest Updates

A man was injured and a four-star hotel sustained significant damage following an explosion in Bournemouth, England, on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a large-scale evacuation of tourists, and residents.

Dorset Police confirmed they were called to the scene at the Cumberland Hotel on East Cliff Promenade at approximately 12:29 PM GMT. Emergency services, including fire crews and ambulance personnel, responded to reports of a structural collapse and potential gas leak. A spokesperson for the police stated that the injured man was taken to hospital, but his condition is not currently life-threatening.

“We are currently investigating the cause of the explosion and working with the fire service to make the area safe,” said a statement released by Dorset Police. “A large cordon is in place and a number of nearby properties have been evacuated as a precaution.”

The Cumberland Hotel, a prominent landmark in Bournemouth, is a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists. The hotel’s website indicates it has 124 bedrooms and is known for its sea views. Witnesses described a loud bang followed by debris falling from the building. Several guests were reportedly in the process of checking in when the incident occurred.

“There was a huge bang, the whole building shook,” said local resident Sarah Miller, who was walking nearby. “I saw smoke and dust coming from the hotel. It was exceptionally frightening.”

The Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council has established a rest centre at the nearby Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) to provide assistance to those who have been evacuated. The council is coordinating accommodation and support for affected residents and tourists. A BCP Council spokesperson confirmed that approximately 80 people were initially evacuated from the hotel and surrounding properties.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been notified and is expected to conduct a separate investigation into the incident, focusing on potential safety breaches. Initial reports suggest the explosion may have originated in a ground-floor area of the hotel, but the exact cause remains undetermined. Gas engineers are currently on site assessing the integrity of the gas supply to the building.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) was initially called to assist with the response, given the hotel’s proximity to the coastline, but their involvement was later scaled back. A spokesperson for the MCA stated they provided initial support and aerial surveillance but handed over control to Dorset Police and the fire service.

Dorset Police have not released any information regarding potential suspects or motives, and are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The investigation is ongoing, and a structural engineer is assessing the extent of the damage to the hotel to determine its stability. The area surrounding the Cumberland Hotel remains cordoned off, and significant disruption to traffic is expected to continue.

As of Wednesday evening, Dorset Police have stated that the investigation will continue through the night, and a further update will be provided on Thursday morning. The hotel management has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the incident.
