Houston World Cup Funding & Metro Park Plans Revealed

Houston’s public transportation system is poised for significant upgrades as the city prepares to host seven matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A recent announcement details over $9 million in federal funding earmarked for improvements to bus and light rail services, aiming to accommodate the anticipated influx of over 500,000 visitors. The funding arrives as Houston’s Metropolitan Transit Authority (METRO) finalizes plans to expand service and enhance capacity for the international soccer tournament.

The $9.09 million investment, secured through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026, will be allocated to capital improvements, planning initiatives, and operational expenses related to the World Cup and associated events, including the Houston Fan Festival. Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, highlighted the importance of these resources, stating they will “enhance public transit to help meet the expected surge in demand and create memorable experiences for players, teams, and fans.”

Funding Details and Allocation

The federal funding is part of a larger $100 million investment by the Federal Transit Administration to improve public transportation in cities hosting 2026 World Cup matches. Houston’s allocation reflects both the capacity of NRG Stadium, which will host seven games between mid-June and early July, and the overall number of matches the city will host. While the precise details of how METRO will utilize the funds are still being finalized, the agency has outlined a comprehensive plan to address the anticipated transportation challenges.

METRO’s Plan for Increased Service

According to an exclusive interview with KHOU 11, METRO is focusing on maximizing the movement of people efficiently and without disruption. The plan includes increasing the number of buses and trains in service, boosting service frequency, and adding additional security resources. Interim METRO President and CEO Tom Jasien indicated the agency is “95% prepared,” with ongoing work to finalize remaining details. Jasien stated, “We’re going to focus on moving the maximum number of people we can from place to place without interruption.”

The service expansion will run from June 7 through July 11, encompassing the period one week before the first match in Houston and one week after the last. Key areas targeted for increased service include NRG Stadium, the FIFA Fan Fest in East Downtown, both of Houston’s airports, and popular entertainment districts like Uptown/Galleria, Kirby, and the Heights. During a recent Public Safety, Customer Experience and Operations committee meeting, METRO leaders discussed plans to reduce wait times on key routes. For example, service on core routes serving FIFA events will shift from every 30 minutes to every 15 minutes, and in some cases, to every 10 minutes.

Addressing Long-Term Transit Needs

The World Cup funding comes as METRO continues to develop a long-term Transit Master Plan. This plan aims to enhance connectivity and capacity across the Houston area, optimizing existing infrastructure and introducing new services to manage event-level demand. Proposed improvements include accelerated development of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines for quicker travel on high-demand corridors. However, challenges remain, as noted in a report by Apartment Cities, which highlights a significant funding gap to meet the unprecedented demands of the global spectacle.

The Houston Chronicle also reported on METRO’s plans to boost light rail, bus and microtransit services to handle the expected visitor volume.

As Houston prepares to welcome the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, these transit improvements represent a crucial step in ensuring a smooth and accessible experience for all attendees. The coming months will be critical as METRO finalizes its plans and implements the necessary upgrades to meet the demands of this major international event.
