Don’t Miss the Last Full Moon of 2024: A Celestial Finale
As the year draws to a close, there’s a sense of reflection, of looking back on the months that have passed and forward to what lies ahead. And what better way to mark this transition than with a celestial spectacle: the last full moon of 2024, known as the Cold Moon.
This year’s final full moon graces the skies above Los Angeles on the evening of December 15th. The moon will appear nearly full for about two days on either side of this date, offering ample opportunity to catch a glimpse of its ethereal glow.
Officially, the Cold Moon will reach its fullest point at 1:01am on December 16th – late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, depending on your perspective. After illuminating the western sky until 7:28am, it will then dip below the horizon, only to reappear in the east at 5:02pm.
Finding the Perfect Viewing Spot
While the moon’s brilliance is such that it can often be seen even amidst city lights, venturing to a darker location will significantly enhance your viewing experience. Los Angeles is fortunate to have expansive open spaces where the night sky glitters with stars, providing an ideal backdrop for witnessing the moon’s luminosity.
Before midnight, aim for a clear view of the eastern sky. After midnight, shift your gaze to the west for the best viewing angles.
