According to Cuba Travelin Cuba you can pay in several ways: in cash in Cuban pesos, or with national or foreign bank cards.
Regarding debit or credit cards that work in Cuba, they specify that the following cards are accepted: Visa, Mastercard, Unionpay, Ocean Card, CABAL and American International Service (AIS).
“No card issued by United States institutions works in Cuba,” alert on the official site.
In this sense, they advise travelers to consult with the bank where they have their bank account regarding whether they will be able to use their card in Cuba.
However, to make purchases and pay for services on the island they recommend using the MLC Prepaid Cards, which can be purchased at the CADECA office network, airports, hotels and ports.
They assure that once the stay in Cuba ends, the client will be refunded the balance on their card once morest the exchange rate of the day.
“What the client must have is their prepaid card and their identification document; which is carried out at the CADECA of the airport/port of departure from the country”, specifies Cuba Travel.
Likewise, they inform that this product has a validity period of 5 years and you can deposit a minimum of 50 USD and a maximum of 1000 USD.
You can exchange your foreign currency in Cuba in the network of Exchange Houses, at a rate of 1 USD = 110.40000 CUP.
In the illegal market, however, the exchange rate far exceeds the official one, although it carries risks. As of February 16, 2024, the US dollar is exchanged for 302 Cuban pesos.
