They may not be particularly pretty to look at, but they have other qualities – and they need them, given their way of life: naked mole rats (Heterocephalus glaber) spend most of their lives in a widely ramified burrow made up of miles of tunnels. Similar to an insect colony, under the rule of a queen, the only fertile female in the tightly organized colony, several hundred individuals are constantly looking for roots, digging new tunnels, taking care of the numerous offspring or guarding the exits.
