Hugh Jackman is set to return to the stage this spring as Audible Theater and TOGETHER – the theatrical partnership spearheaded by Jackman and Sonia Friedman – announced a dynamic 2026 season. The lineup includes a revival of the critically acclaimed Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes alongside two latest productions: Tom Noonan’s What Happened Was, starring Corey Stoll and Cecily Strong, and Ella Hickson’s New Born, featuring Jackman alongside Marianna Gailus and Sepideh Moafi. This season promises a compelling blend of provocative drama and intimate storytelling at the Minetta Lane Theatre in New York City.
The season kicks off on March 17 with the return of Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes, Hannah Moscovitch’s play that explores themes of desire, power, and blurred boundaries. The production, which received a “Critic’s Pick” from The New York Times during its initial run, will run through April 20. Notably, an audio recording of the play is already available on Audible, extending its reach to a wider audience. The accessibility-focused partnership between Audible and TOGETHER aims to bring visceral theater to a broad audience, with 25% of tickets for every performance priced at $35, available through TodayTix or at the Minetta Lane box office.
Following Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes, Ian Rickson will direct the first major revival of Tom Noonan’s What Happened Was, beginning performances on April 14. The play, a darkly humorous exploration of a first date, stars Corey Stoll, known for his roles in Billions and Appropriate, and Cecily Strong, a former cast member of Saturday Night Live and star of Apple TV+’s Schmigadoon. What Happened Was will run through June 14. Noonan also wrote and directed the 1994 screen adaptation of the play, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, according to the provided materials.
Completing the season is Ella Hickson’s New Born, a trio of monologues that will begin performances on May 8 and run through June 8. This production features Hugh Jackman, alongside Marianna Gailus (known for her work in Vanya and Hedda Gabler) and Sepideh Moafi (of The Pitt and The L Word: Generation Q). Both What Happened Was and New Born will be recorded and released on Audible at a later date, further expanding the reach of these productions.
Jackman expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “Our TOGETHER and Audible collaboration is what drew me to theater in the first place: incredible words brought to life in a space where the bond between actor and audience is immediate. Our productions deliver just that at the Minetta Lane, and later, we extend that experience to wherever you might be listening.” He also highlighted his excitement about working with the ensemble and revisiting Moscovitch’s play, as well as taking on Hickson’s work.
Friedman and Kate Navin, Audible’s North American Head of Creative Development, jointly emphasized the importance of celebrating Tom Noonan’s legacy and bringing his work back to New York City. They also praised Hickson’s ability to create vivid and compelling characters, stating that the productions feel “particularly resonant at a moment when audiences are searching for connection and immediacy.”
