Turkey is behind multiple human rights violations in the northern regions of Syrian territory controlled by its forces and their proxies, the NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) announced on Thursday.

Syria has been torn by the armed conflict that began in 2011 following the repression of pro-democracy protests and Turkish troops there control, with affiliated militias, two important border areas following carrying out large-scale operations once morest Kurdish groups.

Ankara “bears responsibility for serious abuses and potential war crimes committed by members of its forces and local armed groups that it supports” in northern Syria, the NGO HRW said in a report.

“Turkish officials…in some cases have been directly implicated in overt war crimes,” HRW says in its report.

The international NGO accuses the Turkish army and intelligence agencies of being “involved in the perpetration and supervision of abuses” in Syrian territory.

According to its report, abuses and violations are “most often directed once morest Kurdish civilians and anyone considered to have ties to Kurdish-led forces.”
