Huntsville Free Pit Bull Adoptions: St. Pitty’s Week 2024 | FOX54

Huntsville, Alabama – Residents looking to add a furry friend to their family will have a special opportunity this month, as Huntsville Animal Services launches its annual “St. Pitty’s Week” adoption event. From March 16-21, adoption fees will be waived for all pit bulls and pit bull mixes, aiming to identify loving homes for these often-overlooked dogs. The initiative seeks to combat the stigma surrounding pit bull breeds and highlight their affectionate and loyal nature.

The promotion comes as the shelter seeks to address the challenges pit bull-type dogs face in finding permanent homes. According to Animal Services Director John Fischer, these dogs are often among the most affectionate in the shelter, yet they tend to remain available for adoption longer than other breeds. “St. Pitty’s Week is the perfect opportunity to break that trend and show these dogs the love they deserve,” Fischer stated, as reported by the City of Huntsville website.

Finding Your Lucky Charm

To aid potential adopters easily identify eligible dogs, each pit bull and pit bull mix at the Huntsville Animal Services shelter will have a shamrock attached to their kennel. This visual cue will guide visitors to the dogs participating in the waived-fee promotion. The event builds on the success of previous St. Pitty’s Week campaigns, which have seen increased adoption rates for these breeds.

Adoptions include comprehensive care for the animals, encompassing spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchipping, and a City of Huntsville license. This ensures that adopted pets are healthy and legally compliant, providing peace of mind for new owners. Huntsville Animal Services is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. To 5 p.m., Tuesday from 9 a.m. To 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. To 3 p.m., offering ample opportunity for potential adopters to visit the shelter.

Adopt-on-the-Spot Event at Starbucks

The week-long promotion will culminate in an “Adopt-on-the-Spot” pop-up event on Saturday, March 22, from 1 p.m. To 3 p.m. At Starbucks Village of Providence, located at 20 Town Center Drive NW. This event provides a convenient and relaxed setting for residents to meet adoptable pit bulls and complete the adoption process. Rocket City Now reports that the event will offer a chance to share a “pup cup” while finding a new companion.

Animal Services will accept cash or checks to facilitate the adoption process and staff will be on hand to assist with paperwork and answer any questions potential adopters may have. A complete list of available pets can be found on the Huntsville Animal Services website.

Another adoption event is scheduled for Saturday, March 21, from 10 a.m. To 3 p.m. At Petsense, 2143 Winchester Road, according to 256today.com.

Huntsville Animal Services first announced the return of St. Pitty’s Week on March 8, 2026, via Instagram, generating early excitement for the event.

As St. Pitty’s Week approaches, Huntsville Animal Services encourages the community to consider opening their hearts and homes to a deserving pit bull or pit bull mix. The initiative represents a continued effort to promote responsible pet ownership and find loving families for all animals in their care. The success of this year’s event will likely influence future adoption campaigns and strategies for promoting often-misunderstood breeds.
