Ice, Snow & 70s: Massachusetts Weather Forecast – NBC Boston

A winter weather advisory is in effect for much of Massachusetts starting Thursday evening, as a mix of ice, sleet, and snow is forecast to create hazardous travel conditions. The advisory, which extends through noon on Friday, also covers portions of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Vermont, according to the National Weather Service.

The approaching storm system is expected to bring rain that will transition to a wintry mix, potentially causing significant disruptions. Officials warn that travel could develop into very difficult, with the possibility of tree and powerline damage due to the weight of ice accumulation. The Greater Worcester and MetroWest areas are anticipated to experience the worst of the conditions, potentially exceeding the impacts of a similar event earlier this week.

While the exact precipitation type remains uncertain, particularly north of the Massachusetts Turnpike, forecasters are preparing for a challenging scenario. Model guidance suggests a mix of sleet and snow, with projections ranging up to 8 inches of “snow” in some areas. Although, a significant portion of this is expected to be sleet, which will reduce overall accumulation. The current forecast indicates 1-3 inches of snow and sleet mix is likely.

Travel Impacts and Timing

The most hazardous travel conditions are expected Thursday evening through Friday morning. Freezing drizzle is also possible early Friday, continuing to create slick roadways. The MBTA Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail is already experiencing delays. As of 4:38 PM on Thursday, March 5, 2026, Train 553 to Worcester is running 25-35 minutes behind schedule due to a mechanical issue. Train 568 departing from Worcester at 5:45 PM is expected to be 5-15 minutes late, according to the MBTA. Passengers are advised of unscheduled track changes impacting both the Framingham and Worcester lines until 8:00 PM.

Weekend Outlook: A Shift Towards Warmer Temperatures

The steady precipitation is expected to clear out early Friday morning, leaving behind clouds, mist, fog, and drizzle. However, a warming trend is on the horizon. Temperatures are forecast to climb into the 40s on Saturday, offering a respite from the cold. Saturday will be mostly cloudy, with a chance of peeks of afternoon sun and potential highs in the 50s. Sunday promises even warmer conditions, with a solid chance of reaching 60 degrees with returning sunshine.

Record-Breaking Warmth Possible Next Week

Looking ahead, next week is shaping up to be remarkably mild for early March. Forecasters are predicting a significant influx of warm air, potentially leading to record-setting temperatures. Similar conditions were observed in 2021, when temperatures peaked at 74°F on March 11. Current projections suggest temperatures could reach the low to mid-70s from Boston to Providence and points west, while areas southeast of Massachusetts may remain in the 50s due to southwest winds off the colder water. The forecast confidence is high, signaling a dramatic shift in the weather pattern.

Residents are advised to prepare for changing conditions and monitor the latest forecasts from reliable sources like Time and Date for up-to-date information. As the snowpack diminishes, it’s a sign that spring is on its way, but caution is still advised during the upcoming winter weather event.
