Two thousand mini-earthquakes within one day: the volcanic eruption seems to be getting closer.

Huge cracks run through the town of Grindavik on the Icelandic Reykjanes peninsula – regarding 40 kilometers from the capital Reykjavik.

There have been around 2,000 mini-earthquakes in the past 24 hours. Some had a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale.

The almost 4,000 residents had to leave the town a week ago. Only to save a few belongings, people were allowed to briefly return to their homes under restrictions.

The magma tunnel is growing

Scientists say the magma tunnel beneath the houses has grown to regarding 15 kilometers.

Therefore, it is no longer a question of whether a volcanic eruption will occur, but rather when.

It’s been simmering underground in the fishing town since the end of October. About a week ago the authorities decided that everyone had to pack their things.

A dangerous situation has been declared, giving the rescue workers special rights and making it easier to ensure safety.
