“If you hit the power button on your Android smartphone, it will be an emergency call”, mobile companies call attention-Keitai Watch

NTT DoCoMo, Rakuten Mobile, Softbank, and KDDI each urged caution regarding erroneous calls and confirmations regarding the emergency call function of smartphones equipped with Android 12 or later.

Smartphones with Android 12 or later have a function that allows you to make an emergency call by quickly pressing the power button 5 times or more. It is said that there are cases where this function is used unintentionally and an erroneous call is made. According to NTT Docomo, in December 2022, the National Police Agency received a consultation, and following an investigation, this call was made.

You can check the setting status of this function from “Settings” → “Emergency information and emergency calls” → “Emergency SOS” → “Emergency SOS use”.

According to SoftBank, the default setting is “OFF” for models other than the Pixel series, Xperia 1 III, and Xperia 5 III.
