Ukraine has met the criteria for a $900 million (around €840 million) disbursement from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The funds are part of a $15.6 billion reconstruction aid package, the IMF announced on Tuesday.
Representatives of both sides met in Vienna for a week to discuss the aid package. “Ukraine’s economic activity rebounded strongly in the first quarter thanks to the restoration of energy infrastructure,” said a joint statement by Ukraine and the IMF. Kiev also met all the criteria for disbursing the aid.
IMF officials, Ukraine’s Finance Minister Sergey Marchenko and Central Bank of Ukraine head Andriy Pyshnyi signed an agreement on the reform policies expected of Ukraine in return, particularly on fighting corruption.
The IMF’s financial aid is guaranteed by states that have supported Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression. They are part of a larger $115 billion aid package that also includes other organizations and bilateral creditors.
The aim of the aid money is to prepare the reconstruction of Ukraine, to attract new investments from the private sector and to enable long-term accession to the EU, according to the agreement.
