Impressive landslide in a railway tunnel in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg

“The workers were working on the vault when they saw small landslides. Immediately, evacuation measures were put in place”, said Tom Ewert, CFL’s external and digital communication manager. A few moments later, this same vault collapsed over a length of 4 meters, obstructing the tunnel. The incident caused no injuries.

The railway company claimed that“geological soundings and anchors aimed at guaranteeing the stability of the surrounding rock have been

carried out prior to the work”.

They had not detected any problem. Soon, studies were launched“to determine the reasons behind this incident and analyzes are being carried out to allow the work to continue”.

Line 10 is affected, like a large part of the CFL network, by maintenance work during the summer. It connects the north of the Grand Duchy and Gouvy from Ettelbruck.

This landslide will inevitably have an impact on traffic. ” Traffic will be disrupted, that’s for sure. We are thinking regarding a rotation concerning equipment and personnel. It is complicated, on a Sunday evening, to reach people. We’ll know more early next week.“, explained Tom Ewert.
