The Queen with new Prime Minister Liz Terrace
The Queen has tasked all prime ministers with forming a government since Anthony Eden in 1955, but Liz Terrace was the first prime minister to travel to Scotland to meet the Queen.
In a break with tradition, the new prime minister did not meet the Queen in London at Buckingham Palace.
Instead, the Queen held a meeting with the new Prime Minister at Balmoral.
The Queen ascended to the throne in 1952, when Winston Churchill was prime minister. Below are photos of her with all 16 leaders from her 70-year rule.
