Representatives of the American Embassy and the UN are among others established in the Green Zone.

Demonstrators in support of Shiite leader Moqtada Sadr managed to infiltrate the protected area, and managed to swim in the swimming pool of the Palace of the Republic.

Law enforcement tried to halt the protesters’ advance; several deaths and injuries are to be deplored.

A curfew has been imposed in Baghdad until further notice.
