In Sri Lanka, lawyers, soldiers of democracy, at the bedside of an angry people

“The essence of the profession of lawyer is to defend the rights of citizens and we will continue the fight,” promises Nuwan Bopage, sitting on a bed in the large hospital in Colombo, in the middle of rows of patients. Renowned for his courage, this 38-year-old lawyer was placed under observation due to persistent pain in the head. On the night of Thursday to Friday, the man was violently hit on the temple by soldiers, during a muscular raid by the police which targeted the camp of the demonstrators. The latter, for several months, have opposed a government deemed responsible for the devastating economic crisis that is paralyzing the island.
