Several schools in West Flanders and the province of Antwerp have decided to close their doors from midday on Friday due to the passage of storm Eunice. The Antwerp University also announced the suspension of classes from 1 p.m.
As the wind intensifies, the province of West Flanders has been placed under orange vigilance. This followingnoon, the gusts of wind might reach a power of 150 km / h.
In order to avoid any incident, several groups of schools in the province have decided to close their doors at midday. “The peak of the storm is rightly expected when classes end and students go home, so we are closing early for safety reasons,” said Stroom Group of Schools Chief Executive Chris Vandecasteele. Buses will be made available and reception is provided for children who cannot reach their homes.
In Impact Group schools, the decision to close rests with the principals. “We give them the opportunity to organize themselves as they see fit,” said its spokesperson, Greet Verleye.
In Antwerp, the university also announced the suspension of classes from 1:00 p.m., the rector Herman Van Goethem favoring “safety above all”. During the peak of the storm expected in the middle of the followingnoon, it is recommended that students and academics limit their movements or stay at home.
The five Antwerp provincial secondary schools will also be closed on Friday followingnoon.
