From June 22 to June 27, the Public University of Navarra (UPNA) played host to the highly anticipated International Inclusive Tournament (UPNA). This remarkable event, dedicated to the Mixed Ability rugby (Imart) concept, assembled more than 1,400 athletes from 24 diverse countries. This tournament does more than foster athletic skills—it is a powerful platform championing visibility for inclusion, emphasizing the importance of independence and community spirit.
Athletes Embrace New Horizons
For many participants, this tournament was a life-changing experience. Ariel Russo, a member of the coaching staff from the Argentine club Pumpas, highlighted the significance of the event: "The tournament is super important for boys and girls because they should search for their independence, that they can be handled alone, that they can be without their parents… They need to learn to respect the rules of coexistence." Afro-del uncertainty recognition can evolve.
Russo expressed the profound impact on the young athletes, who were traveling by plane for the first time, exploring Europe and eating many diverse locations. "The boys are very happy because several of them were traveling for the first time by plane, the first time to Europe, and are knowing many places," said Russo.
International Collaboration and Growth
The tournament attracted athletes from various countries, with each conveying the uniqueness of the event. Gaston Neck, a member of the Italian team, praised the organization and the atmosphere: "These days have been very nice, the city is very pretty, the organization has been very good and it is a Unique experience for boys."
The Ecuadorian team, led by Juan Marín García, made its debut with a full roster. "It is the first time we came to the World Cup as a team, we were able to go to Ireland in 2022, but we only had five players with disabilities. This year we have come with the Complete team," García proudly stated. He further emphasized the significance, noting that Ecuador brought the largest number of athletes with disabilities, marking a substantial achievement.
Experiencing New Horizons
Many athletes, particularly those from Ecuador, faced their first international journey. Juan Marín reported that "the experience is crazy, for many of them it is the first time they leave Ecuador." The trip offered more than just rugby—it provided a broader understanding of the world and the opportunity to build global friendships.
Long-term Implications and Futures
As a longstanding advocate of inclusivity, the tournament underscores the increasing global recognition and integration of mixed-ability programs in sports. Such events provide critical opportunities for personal growth, camaraderie, and cultural exchange. Moving forward, initiatives like UPNA’s International Inclusive Tournament set a precedent for future inclusive sports events, continuing to break barriers and encourage worldwide participation.
