Miki Berenyi, the voice behind the ethereal indie rock of Lush, has carved a distinct path in the music world. While Lush, known for hits like “Sweetness and Light” and “De-Luxe”, enjoyed success in the 1990s, Berenyi’s solo endeavors have taken her on a deeper, more introspective musical journey.
Berenyi’s recent tour with Lush and the release of the “Blind Spot” EP marked a poignant reunion for fans.Though, the joy was tinged with a bittersweet reality. “The tour was always intended as a one-off,” Berenyi reveals, “partly as I’ve got two kids, was the main breadwinner and wasn’t going to give up my job in publishing for the precarious finances of a band. Emma [Anderson] had her daughter, too. We had a great time making the EP and it was lovely to sell out the Roundhouse, but the problem in bands is always how you navigate bumps in the road.” The challenges of maintaining a balance between personal and creative commitments ultimately led to the reunion’s short-lived nature.
The influence of Lush’s legacy is undeniable, yet Berenyi’s current musical focus lies with the Miki Berenyi Trio. The band’s debut album “Tripla,” meaning “triple” in Hungarian, reflects Berenyi’s desire to explore new sonic landscapes and personal themes.
The album’s title signifies not only the three-piece band structure but also the threefold exploration of personal experiences, political consciousness, and the impact of technology. “I realised that most [pop] lyrics are grounded in being young – love and sex and the energy of youth,” Berenyi observes. “It’s harder to find things to write about when you’re older that isn’t gardening or a trip to B&Q,” she laughs. “So [on Tripla] there’s green politics and social media and stuff. At my age [57],it can sound like you’re trying to be relevant and young, but those things affect older people just as much. I wrote about how things affect me emotionally, which I have always done.”
Berenyi’s journey from the heady heights of 90s alternative rock to the introspective world of the Miki Berenyi Trio demonstrates a commitment to artistic evolution and a willingness to explore the complexities of life through music. Her upcoming projects promise to continue captivating audiences with her unique blend of musicality, lyrical honesty, and emotional depth.
What inspired Miki Berenyi to form the Miki Berenyi Trio and explore new sonic landscapes with this project?
Miki Berenyi, the ethereal voice behind iconic indie rock band Lush, has dipped her toes into a variety of musical landscapes – from the heady heights of 90s alternative rock to the introspective worlds of her solo projects. Recently, she chatted with us about her journey, the brief Lush reunion, and her latest endeavor, the Miki Berenyi Trio.
Lush Reunion: A Bittersweet Encore
Last year’s Lush reunion tour and Blind Spot EP saw you reconnect with your roots. What was it like getting back together with Emma and hitting the stage again?
“It was fantastic, really. We’d discussed so manny times over the years, ‘why don’t we do this again?’ And it happened. The EP was enjoyable to create, and selling out the Roundhouse was fantastic. But… it was always meant to be a one-off. Balancing family and creative commitments is tricky, and you have to navigate that carefully.
From Lush to Miki Berenyi Trio: Charting New Sonic Landscapes
Your debut album with the Miki Berenyi Trio, Tripla, explores some new ground. What inspired this shift in sound and themes?
“I wanted to delve into diffrent emotions and experiences. Most pop lyrics dwell on youth, and I thought, ‘Well, what do I know about at 57?’ So, I wrote about green politics, social media, and how everyday life affects me emotionally – things that might typically make you sound like you’re trying to hard, but they’re genuine concerns. Plus, exploring new sonic landscapes keeps things fresh and exciting!
Musical Evolution: A Life-Long Journey
Your musical journey is a testament to artistic growth and evolution. If you could offer one piece of advice to young musicians hoping to follow in your footsteps, what would it be?
“Never be afraid to embrace new sounds and ideas. Evolution is part of the creative process, and it’s what makes music so captivating. Don’t be afraid to explore and push boundaries, even if it means stepping away from your comfort zone.”
As Miki’s journey continues, one thing’s for certain: her unique blend of musicality, lyrical honesty, and emotional depth will continue to captivate us all. Stay tuned for more from the ever-evolving Miki Berenyi Trio!
