A baby has been taken to hospital following being found in a grocery bag by a dog walker in east London, Sky News reports.

Police are trying to find the baby’s mother, who they believe will need intensive medical care.

Police were called to the junction of Greenway and High Street South in Newham at around 9.13pm on Thursday evening.

The newborn was found wrapped in a towel inside the bag, but police report that her life is not in danger, according to information obtained by Sky News.

“I am delighted to report that she was not injured in any way and is safe and in the care of hospital staff,” says Superintendent Simon Crick, who heads police in Newham.

The Met Office said the temperature was as low as -3C in London at the time the baby was found.

Mr Crick added that law enforcement is now “extremely concerned” for the welfare of the baby’s mother who is believed to have “gone through a traumatic ordeal” and will require medical attention when she is found.

He also urges him to go to the nearest hospital or police station or to call 999 for help.
