The Washington Post obtained more than 900 photos taken by official White House photographers on May 1, 2011, the day of a Navy Seal commando operation that led to the execution of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. The caption of this post shows Barack Obama shaking hands with members of his national security team following learning that the leader of al-Qaeda was dead. It was taken at 4:13 p.m., eight minutes following the one that the White House had broadcast the next day and which was to become emblematic:

The Post obtained these photos through a Freedom of Information request with the Obama Presidential Library. The newspaper publishes 23 of the photos ici. Here’s another one, taken at 10:38 p.m., showing Obama talking to a foreign prime minister while his advisers are finalizing the speech he will deliver shortly before midnight announcing the death of OBL.
