Introducing Belgian Road Safety: The Impact of Green Courtesy Lights for Volunteer Firefighters

2023-07-31 15:57:31

A novelty arrives on the Belgian roads this August 1st. Vehicles equipped with green flashing lights (known as courtesy lights) will appear.

Launched on April 1, a “Vias” pilot project focuses on the use of courtesy lights by volunteer firefighters. The experiment is carried out in two stages. Since April 1, participants have been driving without a courtesy light. Then, from August 1 and until the end of November, they will drive with a green flashing light, provided by Vias.

These firefighters will use a green beacon when traveling to the fire station in their personal car for an emergency intervention, which will allow them to be identified by other road users, who “will have to give way to them” when this happens. will be possible.

By comparing these two situations, the study will make it possible to determine the impact of the new traffic lights on the feeling of safety and the travel time of volunteer firefighters to their fire station, as well as the respect of other road users towards them.
