Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh described today, Tuesday, September 28, the recent statements of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev regarding the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ maneuvers on the border between the two countries as “surprising,” and said: “This is a sovereign issue and is done for the sake of peace and stability in the region.” the entire region.”
Khatibzadeh added that his country will not tolerate the presence of the Zionist entity, even if it is a formality, near its borders and will take what it deems necessary for its national security.
It is noteworthy that the Republic of Azerbaijan has strong relations with Israel, and Tehran has repeatedly protested against these relations, but the tension between Tehran and Baku escalated after Azerbaijan arrested two Iranian truck drivers, accused of illegally entering the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
Subsequently, reports were published that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards sent military equipment to the border areas between Iran and Azerbaijan.
As Hassan Ameli, the representative of the Iranian guide and Friday preacher in Ardabil, said about this military maneuver of the Revolutionary Guards: “Israel is our archenemy and it has come to Azerbaijan to conspire against Iran. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard is conducting maneuvers in front of its enemy, and it sends a message to Israel warning it of the consequences of committing a crime.” errors”.
But Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Monday expressed his astonishment at Iran’s conduct of military exercises near the Aras River on the border between the two countries, saying that “such an action did not happen during the 30 years of Azerbaijan’s independence.”
In a statement he made to the official Turkish news agency “Anadolu”, Aliyev criticized the timing of these maneuvers, which come after Azerbaijan liberated its lands in Karabakh into the hands of its forces. temporary legal.
In response to these statements, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said: “Iran has always expressed its opposition to any occupation of the lands, and stressed the need to respect the territorial sovereignty of countries and internationally recognized borders.”
While Aliyev stressed that the arrival of Iranian trucks to the Karabakh region had also occurred previously, saying: “In July, I ordered the staff of the presidential office to speak with the Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan, because we wanted to resolve this issue amicably and stop the mentioned operation.”
He pointed out that Azerbaijan sent an official note to Tehran in early August, against the background of the entry of trucks, and summoned the Iranian ambassador in Baku to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and demanded that he stop this matter.
Aliyev’s statements come after the Iranian ambassador in Baku, Abbas Mousavi, said that “the relations between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan are so strong that foreign circles cannot smash the relations between the two countries.”
Mousavi described stopping Iranian truck drivers who entered Karabakh as an “arbitrary” measure.
