Ironman in Hawaii canceled: For triathlon World Cup

Dhe legendary Ironman because of the Corona crisis, Hawaii will not take place in February 2021 and has been finally canceled for the first time in its history. The organizers announced on Tuesday (local time).

The World Championship in triathlon over 3.86 kilometers swimming, 180.2 kilometers cycling and 42.2 kilometers running was originally scheduled for October 10, but was postponed to February due to the pandemic in May. In 2021 there should be two world champions in one year for the first time since 1982.

The event, which was initially postponed, was canceled with a “heavy heart”, the statement said. The 70.3 World Cup over half the distance will only take place again in autumn 2021. “We were hopeful that we could welcome our athletes, their families and fans to these events, but the ongoing influence of the pandemic makes this impossible,” wrote the organizers. “It’s tough to make this decision in July, but it brings clarity to athletes, hosts, and partners.”

Since the victory of Sebastian Kienle In 2014 there were only German winners in Hawaii. Jan Frodeno won in 2015, 2016 and 2019, in between Patrick Lange won first place twice. The Ironman took place for the first time in 1978. Athletes who qualified for 2020 should be allowed to participate in the World Championships in 2021 or 2022.

There have been no contests this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The EM in Frankfurt / Main was finally canceled a month ago.
