Israel’s Attack on UN Building in Gaza: UNRWA’s Response and Impact on Relief Efforts

2023-11-13 13:59:00
According to the UN, Israel attacked a building housing UN employees in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. The attack near the Rafah border crossing is “another indication that no place in Gaza is safe,” said Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner General of the UN Palestinian relief agency UNRWA. The organization sent the building’s location coordinates to all parties to the conflict twice, including on Friday. The information might not initially be independently verified.

UNRWA said the guesthouse was currently housing four UN employees who left the building shortly before the attack. Otherwise they would have been “all killed” in the attack. It goes on to say that displaced persons will not be accommodated in the building. More than 60 UN facilities have been directly or indirectly damaged in recent weeks, UNRWA said. Most of them are schools that now serve as emergency shelters.
