After several incidents involving torn or injured animals in the Straßwalchen area, there is now certainty: Using a DNA sample, the tear on a roebuck might now be clearly assigned to a wolf.

The dead roebuck was discovered around three weeks ago in Oberhofen am Irrsee (Upper Austria) on the Salzburg state border. A wild animal had injured a pony around 800 meters from where this animal was found. And then a photo appeared that was taken in the Straßwalchen district of Holzfeld and is said to show a wolf.

The picture is likely to be authentic. According to Georg Schmidinger, the wolf representative of the state of Upper Austria for the area south of the Danube, the roebuck’s tear might now be assigned to a wolf using a DNA sample. Schmidinger told SN on Friday: “In this case that means: A wild animal was killed by another wild animal. However, a connection to the incident with the pony can no longer be confirmed.”
