Italian President Sergio Mattarella visits Cologne Cathedral – Archdiocese of Cologne

The cathedral provost welcomed the prominent visitor at the main portal of Cologne Cathedral. This was followed by a short tour of the state guests through the nave and part of the cathedral choir, the 700th anniversary of its consecration in 2022.

The state guests were particularly impressed by the Shrine of the Three Kings, the most artistically important and the most sophisticated reliquary of the Middle Ages. It was created between around 1190 and 1220 for the bones of the Three Kings, which were brought from Milan to Cologne in 1164.

Invitation to cross under the Three Kings Shrine

Following the tradition of the Epiphany pilgrimage currently taking place at Cologne Cathedral, the cathedral provost finally invited the state guests to pass under the Epiphany shrine.
