by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

The Italian men’s short track relay team claimed a bronze medal at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics on Wednesday, February 20th, adding to the growing medal count for the host nation. The victory, however, was bittersweet as Italian short track star Arianna Fontana did not reach the podium in her events today. The Games continue to showcase thrilling competition across a range of winter sports, with a full schedule of events unfolding throughout the day.

This bronze medal represents a significant achievement for the Italian team in short track speed skating, a discipline where they have consistently demonstrated competitive strength. Whereas Fontana, a veteran of multiple Winter Olympics and a decorated athlete, faced a challenging day, the success of the men’s relay team underscores the depth of talent within the Italian squad. The team’s performance highlights Italy’s commitment to developing its winter sports programs and providing a platform for its athletes to excel on the world stage.

Today’s Olympic Schedule: A Full Day of Competition

Italy is fielding a record number of athletes at the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics, as reported by Quotidiano Sportivo. The schedule for February 20th is packed with events across various disciplines. Competition began this morning with Freestyle Ski Cross qualifications at Livigno Snow Park, featuring Andrea Chesi and Jole Galli. The ski cross events continued throughout the morning with Octavi finals, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals.

At the Anterselva Biathlon Arena, Tommaso Giacomel, Lukas Hofer, and Nicola Romanin competed in the Men’s Mass Start Biathlon event. Later in the afternoon, Francesca Lollobrigida took to the ice at the Milano Ice Park for the 1500m speed skating event. The Cortina Sliding Centre hosted the first heat of the two-man Bob event, with the Italian team of Giada Andreutti, Anna Costella, Simona De Silvestro, and Alessia Gatti competing. A second heat followed shortly after.

Short Track Highlights and Fontana’s Performance

The Milano Ice Skating Arena was the focal point for short track action today. Elisa Confortola, Arianna Fontana, and Arianna Sighel all competed in the quarterfinal rounds of the Women’s 1500m event. The women’s 1500m continued with Semifinals, Finale B, and Finale A. The Italian men’s team, comprised of Andrea Cassinelli, Thomas Nadalini, Pietro Sighel, and Luca Spechenhauser, secured the bronze medal in the 5000m relay final. As reported by Il Sole 24 ORE, the Italian men’s relay team took bronze in the short track event.

Despite the team’s success, Arianna Fontana, a prominent figure in Italian short track, did not achieve a podium finish in her events today. Fontana has been a mainstay of the Italian Olympic team for years, and her absence from the medal standings is notable. She remains a key competitor, and fans will be watching to see how she performs in upcoming races.

Looking Ahead

The Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics continue to deliver exciting moments and showcase the dedication of athletes from around the globe. The remaining days of competition promise further thrilling events and opportunities for athletes to achieve their Olympic dreams. The focus will now shift to upcoming events in biathlon, speed skating, and bobsleigh, as well as continued action in short track speed skating.
