The Italian Communications Authority (Agcom) imposed a fine of 5.8 million euros ($6.4 million) on the Meta Group (Facebook and Instagram) for violating a law prohibiting the publication of advertisements for betting games.

The authority indicated, in a statement, that “on December 20, it imposed a fine on the American company amounting to 5 million and 850 thousand euros for violating a decision prohibiting advertisements related to games of chance and gambling.”

The authority said that it “noticed the presence of indirect content among the promotional or content, related to games or bets from which the user may make profits, in 18 accounts (5 on Instagram and 13 on Facebook), in addition to 32 content.”

Since 2018, Italian law has prohibited “any form of related to games, or bets with winnings, as well as gambling games, even if they are indirect,” in the media, via billboards, and digital platforms, including social media networks.

The giant American technology company, for which Europe is a major market, was fined several times, specifically for violating European data protection law and not processing data related to minors.

The Italian Communications Authority recently fined the YouTube and Twitch platforms for the same reasons.
