Cagliari – Italian football is mourning the loss of one of its greatest players. Luigi “Gigi” Riva has died aged 79, the Italian Football Federation announced on Monday. Riva is the record goalscorer in the Italian national team and became European champion with the Squadra Azzurra in 1968 and runner-up in the world championship in 1970. He led his Sardinian club Cagliari to their only championship title as top scorer in the 1969/70 season.
