Jack Draper Wins Indian Wells Return After Injury Comeback

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Indian Wells, CA – Jack Draper successfully launched his title defence at the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday, overcoming a slow start and battling past Roberto Bautista Agut 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The British number one, returning to action after an eight-month layoff due to a left arm injury, demonstrated resilience and a growing comfort level as the match progressed.

Draper, the defending champion at Indian Wells after a stunning run to the title in 2025 – which included victories over Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune – admitted to feeling “a little bit underprepared” given the extended time away from competition. His return to the ATP Tour began last week in Dubai, where he won one match and this victory marks a significant step forward in his comeback. The 24-year-vintage is currently ranked No. 14 in the PIF ATP Rankings according to the ATP Tour.

The match began with Bautista Agut, a former World No. 9, taking control with an early break of serve and securing the first set 6-3. Draper appeared somewhat tentative in the opening stages, struggling with consistency. However, he found his rhythm at the beginning of the second set, shifting to a more aggressive approach and breaking Bautista Agut to establish a 2-0 lead.

Draper carried that momentum into the decisive third set, securing an early break and building a comfortable 5-2 advantage. Despite a determined effort from Bautista Agut, who created three break-point opportunities while serving to stay in the match, Draper held firm, saving all three with powerful serves to close out the victory in one hour and 46 minutes. ESPN reports Draper saved all nine points he contested at the net.

“It felt amazing. I have really felt good here,” Draper said in a post-match interview with Sky Sports. “It is good to be back somewhere I have great memories, but at the same time I was a little bit underprepared because of the amount of tennis I have missed. I was coming out today against a really formidable opponent. The first set was a bit edgy, but then I have managed to find a little bit of spark.”

Draper’s aggressive play was a key factor in his comeback. He hit 24 forehand winners throughout the match, with 20 coming in the final two sets. His ability to move forward and finish points at the net also proved crucial, winning all nine net points contested. The ATP Tour noted Draper’s impressive performance in this area.

Looking Ahead for Draper

Draper had stated prior to the tournament that he “Wouldn’t be in Indian Wells if he didn’t feel he could go all the way.” He will now face Francisco Cerundolo in the third round, continuing his quest to defend his title. The win provides a significant boost of confidence as he navigates his return to the tour and aims to regain the form that saw him reach the pinnacle of his career last year.

The road ahead will undoubtedly present challenges, but Draper’s performance against Bautista Agut demonstrates his determination and potential. His ability to overcome adversity and find his spark after a lengthy injury layoff is a testament to his resilience and dedication to the sport.
