Jamaica’s Rising Dengue Fever Cases: Department of Health Urges Vigilance

2023-08-20 20:49:00

In Jamaicathe Department of Health and Welfare is advising the public to remain vigilant as the number of dengue fever cases rises.

Data from the ministry’s surveillance unit shows a 13 percent increase in cases of the mosquito-borne disease since the start of the year. This figure is higher than those recorded in the epidemiological years 2021 and 2022. Although there is an increase in dengue fever activity, Jamaica is not currently experiencing an outbreak, health authorities say.

The ministry says it has identified nine cases of dengue virus type 2 in four parishes – Kingston and St. Andrew; St. Thomas; St. Catherine and Westmoreland. The presence of the type 2 virus, cases of which have not been observed in the population since 2010, increases the risk of a possible epidemic on the island.
