Jan Zieliński and Su-wei Hsieh are the winners of the Grand Slam Australian Open

It was the 25th Grand Slam final with the participation of a Polish tennis player and the ninth winning one. Zieliński is the fifth Polish tennis player, following Jadwiga Jędrzejowska, Wojciech Fibak, Łukasz Kubota and Iga Świątek, who can boast a trophy in one of the four most prestigious tennis events.

This is also the first Polish victory in the mixed race.

The final of the competition, played only during Grand Slam tournaments and the Olympic Games, was extremely even.

In the first game, both pairs had one break each, and the decision was made in a tie-break, where Krawczyk, whose father is Polish, played the main role.

In the second set, the second-seeded American-British pair, who won Wimbledon twice (2021-22), also took a 4:2 lead following a break – as a result of Zieliński’s double service error.

But then the expressive Pole and the composed, very experienced player from Taiwan started playing as if in a trance. They were practically right.

Zieliński and Hsieh also started the decisive game better, jumped out to 4-0, then led 6-2 or 7-4. However, then they made a few mistakes, Skupski made two aces and the opponents had the match (9-8). However, the last word belonged to Hsieh and Zieliński, who surprised the Briton with an effective return.

“We actually came together at the last minute, but it worked so well that I hope it wasn’t the last time we played together,” Zieliński emphasized following the match.
