Janan SS Bombo Sports Tournament: Basketball, Volleyball & More!

Bombo, Uganda – The Janan Secondary School in Bombo is preparing to host the 7th USSSA Elite Championship, a showcase of secondary school sports talent, beginning February 27th and concluding March 1st, 2026. The event, initially slated for February 14-16th but rescheduled due to school reopening delays, will feature intense competition across multiple disciplines, with basketball taking center stage.

The USSSA Elite Championship brings together the top eight schools per discipline from the 2025 National Championship. This year’s competition will include basketball (both 5×5 and 3×3 formats), volleyball, handball, football, netball, and rugby, providing a comprehensive display of athletic prowess. Participation fees are set at 300,000 Uganda shillings per team, with additional costs for registration and accommodation, according to USSSA online.

Basketball Brackets Set for Elite Competition

The draw for the games was completed on Wednesday, February 25th, 2026, at the GNS Plaza Hotel in Mengo, with USSSA Executive officials Alfred Okanya, Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi, and Godlive Apolot presiding over the proceedings. Emmanuel Kasakya, USSSA Competitions Director, and Bosco Omario, Marketing, Communications and ICT Director, were likewise in attendance. The basketball competition promises to be particularly exciting, with established schools vying for the championship title.

In the 5×5 boys’ bracket, Janan S.S., the host school, will face off against Buddo S.S., Mengo S.S., Seroma Christian High School, and Kiira College Butiki. The girls’ 5×5 pool features Ndejje S.S., Buddo S.S., Janan S.S., and Seroma Christian High School. Both boys and girls will also participate in the quick-paced 3×3 format, with the same schools competing for additional honors. Kawowo Sports reports that the competition will utilize a round-robin format to determine the winning schools.

Janan SS Ready to Welcome Athletes

Janan Secondary School, Bombo campus, has been preparing extensively to host the championship. Head teacher Joseph Mukwaya expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are privileged to host the Elite Secondary School games, for those who have students that love sports and games arrive to Janan because we have all the facilities to host these games,” as reported by Nimsport Uganda. USSSA CEO Christopher Mugisha praised the school’s facilities, noting the availability of suitable fields for handball, netball, volleyball, and football.

The school will also provide mattresses for all participants, a gesture greatly appreciated by the USSSA. These results highlight the competitive landscape and the high level of talent expected at the 2026 edition.

Schools are expected to report to Janan SS, Bombo, on Thursday, February 26th, 2026, in preparation for the first match day on February 27th.
