São Paulo – Corinthians have announced the signing of former England and Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard, bolstering their attacking options ahead of the upcoming Brazilian league season. The 33-year-old joins the Brazilian club on a free transfer from South Korea’s FC Seoul, where he played since 2024 and has signed a contract through the end of 2026 with the option to extend, the club confirmed Friday.
The arrival of Lingard, who has 32 international appearances for England with six goals, marks a significant addition for the defending Brazilian Cup champions as they also contend for the Copa Libertadores title. Corinthians currently sit third in the Brazilian league with seven points from four matches, three points behind co-leaders Palmeiras and São Paulo according to the AP.
“From the (United) Kingdom to the favela,” Corinthians posted on Instagram, sharing a picture of Lingard holding the club’s No. 77 shirt. The sentiment reflects the club’s enthusiasm for bringing a player with Lingard’s international pedigree to Brazil.
Lingard began his career at Manchester United, making 232 appearances for the Red Devils and scoring 35 goals. While he experienced loan spells at Brighton & Hove Albion, Leicester City, Birmingham City, Derby County, and West Ham United, it was his time at Old Trafford that established him as a recognizable name in English football. He also enjoyed a productive spell with West Ham in 2021, scoring nine goals in 16 appearances.
A Return to Familiar Territory
Interestingly, Lingard will reunite with former Manchester United teammate Memphis Depay at Corinthians. Depay has been with the São Paulo-based club since 2024, and the pair will hope to rekindle their on-field connection in Brazil. Sky Sports reports that Corinthians officials are hoping Lingard will be eligible for their home league match against Coritiba on Wednesday.
Lingard’s Recent Career Path
Prior to joining Corinthians, Lingard spent time in South Korea with FC Seoul, where he featured in 67 matches and scored 19 goals. His move to Brazil represents a new chapter in his career, taking him to a different continent and a new footballing culture. According to his Wikipedia page, Lingard has won the UEFA Europa League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, and FA Community Shield during his career.
“My first impression is being very happy, and I can’t wait to get going,” Lingard said, as reported by the Associated Press. “It is a magical feeling. I’ve only seen (the Corinthians fans) online, but to actually be there is amazing.”
What’s Next for Corinthians?
The addition of Lingard provides Corinthians with a creative attacking option as they navigate a challenging schedule in both the Brazilian league and the Copa Libertadores. His experience and goal-scoring ability will be crucial as the club aims to secure further silverware. The team will be looking to build on their current league position and make a strong push for the title. Fans will be eager to see how Lingard integrates into the team and how his partnership with Depay develops.
