Paris 2024 Olympics: France Télévisions expects audience peaks

2024-07-28 14:21:15

The last time the Olympics were in Paris, in 1924, television had not even been born. A century later, despite a media landscape disrupted by social networks and streaming, the Olympiad remains a formidable audience catalyst for the small screen, especially in the host country. France Télévisions, the official free-to-air broadcaster, certainly has something to dream about.

The public broadcasting group has set the bar very high. “100% of French people will follow the Olympic and Paralympic Games” on France Télévisions, and at least one in two on its digital platform, predicted Stéphane Sitbon-Gomez, the director of antennas and programs. As for the retransmission of the opening ceremony, this audacious “show” could approach, or even exceed, the absolute record for French television, namely 24 million viewers on TF1 for the final of the Blues against Argentina during the 2022 Football World Cup.
